A. Distribution According to the Living Conditions Index at the National Level {short description of image}{short description of image}
The application of the UBN methodology shows that 32.1 percent of the households residing in Lebanon (35.2 percent of individuals) live below the threshold of the Living Conditions Index. These are divided into households having a very low degree of satisfaction (7.1 percent) and households having a low degree of satisfaction (25 percent) or 6.8 percent and 28.4 percent of individuals, respectively. Households with intermediate satisfaction represent the largest component, with 41.6 percent of the total (42.2 percent of individuals). The share of households having a high degree of satisfaction represents 26.4 percent of all households (22.6 percent of individuals); with 21.9 percent of the households (19.3 percent of individuals) having a high degree of satisfaction, and 4.5 percent of households (3.3 percent of individuals) having a very high degree of satisfaction .

Table 9. Distribution of households and individuals according to degree of satisfaction of needs in the four fields
(5-level classification; Lebanon)
Field Very low Low Intermediate High Very high Total
Housing 10.1 15.8 26.5 30.3 17.3 100
Water and sewerage Households Individuals 10.0 5.5 65.9 10.2 8.4 100
Education 16.6 16.2 31.3 16.8 19.1 100
Income-related indicators 19.4 23.4 32.4 16.3 8.5 100
Living conditions index:
Households 7.1 25.0 41.6 21.9 4.5 100
Individuals 6.8 28.4 42.2 19.3 3.3 100
*The percentage of households (and individuals) belonging to the very low degree of satisfaction with respect to the overall Living Conditions Index (7.1 percent and 6.8 percent, respectively) is smaller than the corresponding percentage for any of the four fields (housing, water and sewerage, education and income-related indicators). The explanation is that this percentage is not calculated on the basis of the arithmetic mean of the overall percentages in the four fields, but on the basis of the score obtained by each household independently. This means that if a household falls in this category in one of the four fields it does not necessarily follow that it will fall within the same category with respect to the overall Living Conditions Index. For example, it is possible to select four households such that each one of them falls in this category in one of the fields, but none fall in the same category according to the overall Living Conditions Index. This observation is also true of the remaining degrees of satisfaction, in particular that of very high satisfaction.

(3-level classification; Lebanon)
Field Low Intermediate High Total
Housing 25.9 26.5 47.6 100
Water and sewerage 15.5 65.9 18.6 100
Education 32.8 31.3 35.9 100
Income-related indicators 42.8 32.4 24.8 100

Individuals 35.2 42.2 22.6 100

In general, the distribution of households according to the Living Conditions Index takes the shape of a "normal" curve, as shown in Chart 1.

Households are distributed according to the degrees of satisfaction, with households classified as having an intermediate degree of satisfaction constituting a majority, and a proportionate distribution for the low (32.1 percent) and high (26.4 percent) categories. Within this distribution, the shares of the two categories at both ends of the classification are not far apart with households classified as having a very low degree of satisfaction representing 7.1 percent of all households, compared to 4.5 percent for those in the very high category. A similar spread can also be noted for the low (25 percent) and high (21.9 percent) degrees of satisfaction (Chart 2).
