Two
of the three indicators which enter into the construction of the housing
index, namely, the share of the individual in rooms and the built area,
depend to a large extent on the size of the household. Available data
point to a strong correlation between the low level of the housing index
and the large size of the household, with distinct regional variations.
The average household size in the category that belong to the low degree
of satisfaction is 5.11 individuals, while the average for the high
degree of satisfaction is 3.99. Regional disparities in the size of
households, which can be observed in all categories of satisfaction are
largest in the Mohafazat of the North, with an average household size in
the low degree of satisfaction of 7.01 persons, compared to 5.25 persons
in Beirut. The disparity is less marked in the high degree satisfaction
category, with the average household size varying between 3.47 and 3.98
persons.

it, especially factors of a rural or urban nature, and various cultural
and social factors. It appears that large households in the lower
categories concentrate in rural areas, especially Akkar (7.80 persons),
followed by El-Minieh (7.46) and Hermel (7.16). Among urban areas,
Tripoli records the highest average (6.64 persons).
