D. Relation Between the Housing Index and the Size of the Household {short description of image}{short description of image}
Two of the three indicators which enter into the construction of the housing index, namely, the share of the individual in rooms and the built area, depend to a large extent on the size of the household. Available data point to a strong correlation between the low level of the housing index and the large size of the household, with distinct regional variations.

The average household size in the category that belong to the low degree of satisfaction is 5.11 individuals, while the average for the high degree of satisfaction is 3.99. Regional disparities in the size of households, which can be observed in all categories of satisfaction are largest in the Mohafazat of the North, with an average household size in the low degree of satisfaction of 7.01 persons, compared to 5.25 persons in Beirut. The disparity is less marked in the high degree satisfaction category, with the average household size varying between 3.47 and 3.98 persons.

Table 71 below provides additional details which makes it possible to observe the geographical localization of disparities, and the nature of the factors influencing it, especially factors of a rural or urban nature, and various cultural and social factors. It appears that large households in the lower categories concentrate in rural areas, especially Akkar (7.80 persons), followed by El-Minieh (7.46) and Hermel (7.16). Among urban areas, Tripoli records the highest average (6.64 persons).
