Population and Housing Survey questionnaire did not include information
relating to these aspects. This confined the construction of an
education index to two indicators, namely, pursuit of studies and level
of education. These two indicators are believed to be sufficient in
general to express what is essential with respect to the satisfaction of
the need for education by households and individuals. They also
represent internationally recognized indicators. The prevailing
impression, namely, that the socially acceptable level of education in
Lebanon is high, led initially to consider the completion of the
intermediate level as a suitable threshold for the satisfaction of the
need for education. However, when testing this threshold, it became
clear that the percentage of households and individuals falling below it
was very large (more than one-half of the households). Hence, the
completion of the elementary level was adopted as the threshold for the
indicator of the level of education. Nevertheless, the percentage of
Lebanese households classified as having a low degree of satisfaction
remained definitely high (tables 51 and 52).
