| The Mapping of Living
Conditions in Lebanon, is a result of a joint effort between the
Ministry of social Affairs and the United Nations Development Programme,
which aims to provide information and analyses needed for the
formulation of policies that contribute to the improvement of living
conditions in Lebanon. The study is based on the results of the Population and Housing Survey which was carried out by the Ministry of Social Affairs in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the results of which were published in 1996, in addition to other supplementary sources. The study measures the living conditions of the population residing in Lebanon, using the Unsatisfied Basic Needs methodology. Mathematical means were used to construct a composite index to express the degree of satisfaction of basic needs of resident households, referred to as the Living Conditions Index. Based on this index, households (and individuals) were classified into five (and 3) categories of living conditions, namely: very low and low (their sum constituting the category of low living conditions), Intermediate, High and Very High (the sum of the latter two constituting the category of High living conditions). The study includes tables, charts and maps which depict the distribution of households and individuals according to these classifications at the national level, and according to the mohafazats and kadas (administrative districts and sub-districts). It also includes an analysis of household, educational and social characteristics for these categories. |
