Pro-Poor Development

UNDP's intervention in Poverty Reduction, Regional Development and Civil Society currently focuses on four regions of the country: North-Bekaa (Baalbeck and Hermel), Mount Lebanon (displaced regions), Akkar, and South Lebanon (liberated areas). The Programme component aims at (a) promoting balanced regional development as a means of poverty alleviation by consolidating the projects and programs dealing with marginalized areas; and (b) strengthening local structures- civil society and local government- to lead local participatory development. Programme interventions are expected to result in coordinated action to improve the economic and social situation of the disadvantaged in the selected areas.

These interventions are multi-disciplinary linking different sectors such as education and health, employment generation, poverty alleviation, and local capacity building. Moreover, such interventions guide the dialogue with national counterparts and stakeholders to consolidate national strategies for balanced development and partnership with civil society.

Another aim of the poverty reduction programme component focuses on building the capacity at the Ministry of Social Affairs to formulate and monitor the implementation of social policies at the national level, including the implementation of surveys and studies.
