Students Go Green!

"Sometimes in life there are moments that make us speechless and you offered me these moments" Abir Balmouni - Lebanese University"

On May 9th and 10th, 29 students from eight different universities (AUB, LAU, LU, AUT, USJ, NDU, BALAMAND, USEK) participated in a unique Photo tour experience. The activity was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, UNDP and Schtroumpf as part of Go Green 2003, an environmental awareness project in partnership with Tetra Pak, Barter Card and Coca Cola.

The group outed to regions of Lebanon where the effects of desertification are most noticeable, namely, Batroun, Hamat, Birkayel, Fneidek, Qamouaa, Al Hermel, Firzol, Tarchich, Al Muruj-Bolonia. The students were guided and advised by the professional photographer Mr. Fares Jammal and accompanied by representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, UNDP and Schtroumpf.

The Ministry of Agriculture took in charge the group for two full days, providing transportation and accommodation.

The objective of this activity was to raise awareness on environmental issues among youth and university students, to encourage students self-expression and creativity on desertification impacts and the mismanagement of natural resources and finally, to show the link between poverty and desertification.

Captured temoignages of students described the event as a unique and enriching experience, one of a lifetime!

And that's not it. All pictures were exhibited in Down Town Beirut on June 17, 2003, International Day for combating desertification, to create awareness and to expose the general public to the degradation of land. The best picture was selected and awarded a prize by a jury during Go Green forum at Schtroumpf on July 6, 2003.
