Situation Report: July 31, 2006

Sunday 30th. Was marked by the extensive shelling to the Marjeoun area in the south, which led to suspension of all UN convoys. The day was also marked by the ransacking of the UN House in Beirut, where little was done in terms of convoy organization in consequence. UNDP security officer was slightly injured in the event.

1. Support to Government Emergency Response, and to coordination mechanisms.

UNDP Managerial Support to the Government’s High Relief committee continues. Moreover, UNDP south programme networks with local authorities and communities in the villages of the south has been employed to assist all UN agencies, and NGOs willing to support the area. UNDP has the only civilian UN staff still in the South, in Tyre. He is currently the only provide on data on the area, necessary to mount humanitarian convoys.

2. Emergency Relief Distribution and Assistance.

As earlier mentioned, the convoy to Marjeoun, was suspended on Sunday. The UNDP dispatched good have been diverted to Rmeish and Tibnin, planned to be moved tomorrow (both location in the deep south near the borders).

UNDP will also dispatch bolted water on tomorrow’s convoy to these locations.
