Situation Report: August 1, 2006

The UN agencies strived to hurry the organization of convoys to the South trying to make use of the Israeli announced 48 hours truce. It should be noted that the “air strikes” truce was violated more than once yesterday.

1. Support to Government Emergency Response, and to coordination mechanisms.

UNDP through staff allocated within the GOL High Relief Committee, continues to facilitate its liaison with the International Community and UN Agencies. A meeting was held yesterday with WFP, where a liaison office was established to ensure regular synchronization of HRC and UN system consignments.

Moreover, Involved UN agencies, and UNDP have established a new cluster, led by UNDP, on information management.

The UNDP staff in Tyre continues to be a main source of information for UN agencies, in collating data and planning convoys to the South.

2. Emergency Relief Distribution and Assistance.

Expectedly, the 48 hours truce, has encouraged some communities, to flee the south. That will raise the number of displaced persons in Sidon, the Aley Chouf, area as wellas in Beirut. Thus an increase of UNDP assistance should be also anticipated, given the continuous gap in provision of NFIs within the UN and NGO coordination system. It should be noted that UNDP is providing, within it package, detergents and other cleaning material, considered to be a main tool for an upgraded sanitation (Liaison with health) within the crowded IDP centers.

As for distribution, UNDP managed to divert assistance into Qana, the site of the tragic massacre, and sent items as follows, yesterday.

• 30 boxes of cerelac
• 20 boxes of diapers
• 2 Kitchen Kits
• 2 hygiene Kits

Other items were sent to Sidon, in the South as well, where a leagr number of IDP have been sheltered as follows:

• 30 hygiene Kits
• 25 Kitchen Kits
