General information about UNDP

UNDP is the UN's global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As they develop local capacity, they draw on the people of UNDCP and our wide range of partners.

World leaders have pledged to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, including the overarching goal of cutting poverty in half by 2015. UNDP's network links and coordinates global and national efforts to reach these goals. UNDP furthermore helps developing countries to attract and use aid effectively, and in all our activities, we aim to promote the protection of Human Rights and the Empowerment of Women.

UNDP has made considerable progress in increasing programme focus at the country level, consistent with the corporate strategic results framework. The policy frame work represented by the MDGs, the mandate of UNDP and the specific roles assigned to UNDP through international consensus at the World Summit for Sustainable Development and the International Conference on Financing for Development, which further guide UNDP's work.

UNDP's goals are described in the "Strategic Plan for UNDP 2008-2011, Accelerating Global Progress on Human Development", as endorsed by the Member States of UNDP's Executive Board in 2007. This new plan will guide the UNDP Lebanon country office's programmes and projects for the period 2008-2011, and will focus the programmes around four key "Development Focus Areas."

  4. Crisis Prevention and Recovery

UNDP will work within these areas continue to enhance its operational role, providing policy and technical support to programme countries by working on and advocating for the multisectoral challenges of poverty reduction, democratic governance, crisis prevention and recovery, and environment and sustainable development.

UNDP will furthermore promote gender equality and women's empowerment, supporting programme countries in strengthening their own capacities to design and implement development strategies that reflect specific national circumstances and national objectives, within the overall framework of the internationally agreed development goals.
