As the lead agency on recovery, UNDP has taken on an integrated approach to the recovery efforts of NBC, ensuring that both Lebanese and Palestinian needs are met.
This has been done namely through
1) Provision of support to UNRWA inside the camp
2) Enhancing socio-economic conditions of the Lebanese communities affected by the conflict and
3) Supporting to the Government of Lebanon through the LPDC in the overall Lebanese-Palestinian dialogue issue.
So far, progress has been made in all three components. In the Old Camp UNDP has been contracted by UNRWA to remove 500,000m³ of rubble in an environmentally friendly way and recycle it (see progress map below). Similarly, in the New Camp works have concentrated on rehabilitation of the Camp’s electricity network, enabling the return of 12,000 people to the camp. Also, UNDP manages a joint UN initiative in NBC, with components supporting the inter-agency coordination mechanism, basic infrastructure works and capacity building of the municipality that hosts the camp.
Recovery in the surrounding Lebanese communities has taken place through livelihoods interventions such as the rehabilitation of fisheries, infrastructure works, capacity building and youth and reconciliation between Lebanese and Palestinian (last progress report).
