Background
Following the implementation of the first package of the Quick Start and High Impact Early Recovery Projects, UNDP initiated the Recovery of Lives and Livelihoods set of projects to respond to most urgent priority needs of the war affected communities . With the presence of the UNDP sub-regional offices in South Lebanon, Bekaa and Beirut Southern Suburbs, UNDP assessed the most pressing needs of the communites through in-depth survey of the damages occured to the infrastructure of the villages along with the war impact on the socio-economic conditions of the residents. This participtory assessment has helped local municipalities to prioritize their problems and prepare the recovery plans accordingly.
Based on the above, UNDP tailored the Recovery of Lives and Livelihoos project to meet the arising needs and urgent requirements of the socio-economic situation of the war affetced communities.
The main objective of this initiative aims at restoring the livelihoods, income and employment status of the affected population through revival of SMEs (agricultural and handicrafts production and services, restoration of markets, provision of equipment for municipal services, skills development, training and tools replacement).
Around 30 livelihood activities were identified as at September 2007, some of which are municipal projects, where residents benefit from the offered municipal services which directly and indirectly affect the residents’ livelihoods. Other projects support income generating activities, some of which are of an entrepreneurial nature (cooperatives, micro & small enterprises). All identified projects affect surrounding community as projects support the principal principal economic activity of each respective area whether it is agricultural, economic or trade.
