Background
The Government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora has made it a policy priority to improve living conditions in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. In November 2005, the Government of Lebanon has appointed a special committee, the “Lebanese Working Group dealing with Palestinian Refugee Affairs”(LWG-PR) headed by Ambassador Makkawi. The broad mandate of the LWG focuses on the following key issues: the improvement of living conditions of Palestinian refugees (social, economic, legal and security aspects) residing in and outside camps in Lebanon, in cooperation with UNRWA; initiation of a dialogue to deal with the issue of arms inside and outside the camps; and studying the possibility of establishing diplomatic relations and representation between Lebanon and Palestine.

Achievements & Expected Results
The office
•The set up of the office and purchase of office supplies+ business card and logo designed

NBC Crisis
•Launching of the Master Plan for the reconstruction of NBC on Feb 12,08 at the Grand Serail
•Workshop with the UN on “Early Recovery needs for NBC 6 surrounding communities “ at Quality Inn, Tripoli, on March 3rd, 08
•Facilitate and organize with the EU and UNRWA the 1st visit to the old camp
•Several meetings with the 6 surrounding municipalities
•Facilitate the access of displaced families to the old camp for the collection of personal belongings
•Facilitate the connection or areas adjacent to the official NBC to the EDL Network
•Facilitate the preparations for the rubble removal process in the new and old camp
•Donor Conference for the reconstruction of NBC, in Vienna, June 23rd, 2008
•Launching of the consultancy process on community policing in Nahr el Bared Camp

Awareness Raising
?Youth dialogue sessions in Beirut, North and South
?Workshop on “Palestine Declaration” (issued by the PLO), with the Institute of Palestine Studies
?Patronize the inter Lebanese-Palestinian (from the North )summer school on conflict prevention organized by UNDP, in Ramlieh , in July 08

Policy support and planning
?Participation of LPDC in the Ministry of Social Affairs committee on children’s rights
?Launching of Non Id new procedure, with UNRWA and PLO, Lebanese General Security
?Regular meetings with relevant Lebanese ministries

?Launching the website, and continuing to maintain and upgrade it
