Projects Database / Flood Risk Management and Soil Conservation for Livelihood Recovery in Baalback-Hermel, Phase II
Project ID
00069789
Background
The project aims at supporting early recovery efforts in the conflict-affected Baalback-Hermel region through expanding the flood risk management programme that started in 2008 in Aarsal/Fakhe region to cover new and larger watershed areas (more than 200 square km) that affects the village of Ras Baalback and its surroundings. This will be achieved by the construction of stone walls, check dams and water collection reservoirs to prevent runoff water from reaching villages and farms along the Assi river and through the restoration of land cover to reduce soil erosion. The project will also work on land cover improvement to reduce soil erosion through reforestation and pasture rehabilitation in the target area. The project is financed by the Government of Spain through the Lebanon Recovery Fund, and is in line with the UNDP’s development goal of alleviating poverty in rural drylands of the conflict-affected Baalback Hermel area.
Achievements & Expected Results
The project aims at assisting the Government of Lebanon in its recovery and reform efforts in the conflict-affected and desertification-prone region of Baalback-Hermel through better land management practices, namely: flood risk reduction, soil and moisture conservation and restoration of vegetation cover. To achieve this objective, the following outputs and activities will be undertaken:
1- Establishing and strengthening the coordination and linkages with on-going projects,
2- Managing and reducing the risks and damages caused by floods in target area,
3- Increasingthe land cover in risk area and reducing soil erosion,
4- Sustainability, Capacity building and public awareness
