Projects Database / Coordinated support to UNRWA in response to Naher El Bared Crisis
Project ID
00056998
Background
On May 20th, 2007, fierce clashes erupted between armed members of the radical group Fatah Al Islam (FAI) and the Lebanese Army, in Tripoli in Northern Lebanon. These clashes took place in the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr El Bared (NBC), infiltrated by around 200 armed FAI fighters.
The strategy adopted since the beginning of the crisis consists of providing coordinated support to UNRWA, the mandated lead agency for Palestinian refugees. Support is ensured by the Resident Coordinator (RC) and the United Nations Country Team, through the cluster and inter-cluster meetings organized and led by the different UN agencies, with the participation of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations.
UNDP will support national capacities of the HRC (GIS-based data management system) and the Lebanese Palestinian Dialogue Committee (LPDC), including additional human resources, equipment and the provision of satellite images. UNDP, through its support to the NDO, is also arranging for MAG to carry out demining activities immediately upon cessation of hostilities. UNDP will also provide technical support to UNRWA on the temporary electricity repairs.
